As I reach post numero veinte (20).
I want to say thank you so far for your support.

When I started posting my aim was to attain 1000 views.
As I look at the total views for this blog today, I can see that  we (yes we, you all helped) have surpassed that.
It is amazing to see that my blog was viewed by many people from different countries-Iraq, Russia, Germany, France, United Kingdom and United States just to name a few.
Yes, I feeling little special!

It has been a pleasure  and will continue to be one.
In the process I learnt to look at topics from different perspectives from random conversations.
Most of all I had fun.

I want to thank those who read, commented and shared my post.
To those who suggested topics and will continue to share topics-It is appreciated!

Let's Plan to Plant!

Hi peeps 

So today we have a guest writer from the Rotaract Club of Arima sharing their Recycling project done at Cumaca Roman Catholic Primary School.

There is a saying “to plant is to believe in tomorrow"

But it's more than that

To save our planet is a Nobel task.

 Let’s be honest we all know our grandparents reused, 🔄 recycle and upcycle

Essentially​, that’s how we can save the environment! 🌏

what’s the importance of a plastic bottle?

 Well, Plastic at minimum takes 450 years to more than 1000 years to biodegrade.

Fun Fact : this means that even after we leave the earth our descendants still have our plastic "gifts" there being an eyesore.

These bottles are important because they can be recycled or reused.

 Instead of pollution, we can give the gift of food

1.First, we get empty  bottles,

2.  Then we cut them. Now I'm sure you're asking,but how??

 In most cases cutting the bottle a little under the halfway mark is good.

If you have the bigger bottles like in this picture; a little less bottle height is needed. It makes up in the width.

The rest of the bottle can be turned over holes can be bore in the cap and then voilà , watering can!!!!

3. Then we plant we get a soil mixture 

Garden soil is good, but it needs to be modified.

Good mix can be made by using one part garden soil, one part peat moss and one part perlite or coarse builders sand. Don't use fine beach sand or play sand) Aeration is important to container seedlings.

4. Then planting in containers

 Try using crops that are more suitable for that particular nursery.

 Ask yourself growth rate, space and transplant ability versus capability of the bottle IE revaluate you plant /bottle relationship...Will it last to grow into something beautiful? We suggest,small seasoning crops (come on , you know Caribbean people cannot live without spices and seasoning) . some crops include chive and celery , seedlings like :lettuce and spinach.

In the end we hope you look at this bottle the way she does.Knowing we are making the world a better ,tastier place.

On my way to work the other day, I heard over the radio the sad news of Payless Shoes Source filing for bankruptcy.

Being the concerned supporter of Payless Shoe Source

I had to get to the bottom of this…

So I made a bee-line to the ATM.

Four random letters on repeat in my head as I stood in the line

S- A- L -E, S -A -L -E, S -A -L-E!

Like a child waiting to open her gift on Christmas day
I pushed open Payless door only to hear silence and see random people here and there between lanes.

This is a clear indication that something is not right!

You all know how it goes when there is sale

People does walk with their clan-is mama, papa, aunty, tanty, cousin-sister-friend- neighbour.

Despite no Sale signs, I there convincing myself I am early for the sale

People ain’t know yet!

So I start scanning my lane…

There stood boxes and boxes of shoes

No lowered prices!

Limited red tags!

My poor brain now start to accept what really going on!

No sale?

How?

Why?

What?

Trinidad and Tobago in recession...

Yet, we still managed to support a failing business enough for T&T branches to remain open

You mean to tell me Payless couldn’t show some appreciation with a sale?

Grammar Nazi

This one goes out to all grammar Nazis.

 Ever write a post or put up a status and  ketch yourself trying to remember how to spell a word?

 Being part of the social media generation I find myself often seeing words that are spelled incorrectly. 

Now this post is not for the crowd “oh, gorsh is just a social media post not a scholarly paper"

 This post is for everyone.

 Admit it, raise yuh hand if you ever stopped typing a message to go check Google to see if you spell a word correctly?

 Or call a friend next to you to check it over?

 It happens!

I’ve seen people criticize others for spelling ‘their’ instead of ‘there’ and on top of that call them  E-LITTER-RATE (I’m not making up anything. I saw this on Facebook recently)

 Peeps, I can only assume E-LITTER-RATE is an internet sensation of kittens who share high ratings 

Urban Dictionary here is one to add to the list!

There are the self-proclaimed grammar Nazis who cannot stand to spell words wrong

Come nah man don’t do me that!

According to Rodey “why yuh doin it ?’

I mean how can you criticise and don’t hit spell check ?.

It’s one thing to notice a spelling error (p.s congrats my friend)

 But why do we feel the need to put people on blast

And then to make things worse, put yourself on blast

There are many reasons for bad spelling including typos

 Other times it might just be the persons spelling ability is not that great.

Yes we might chuckle

Here’s a thought, instead of showing off your glorified superiority in the University of Facebook …

Trinidadians lime anywhere and we know this!

And I mean anywhere.

 One time,I literally saw a group of people liming by a gas station, in Tacarigua, on the Main Road.

And I'm not talking just assembling with a couple of beers in hand,

Cooler with Drinks

Group of approximately 6  

Pack of cards.

They looked as though they just came back from the beach-part II of the lime probably or maybe just a stop for gas.

-Rivers (we crossed so many) just to reach the perfect spot.

THE ANTHOLOGY OF HORN (scientific)

In this article, the author will be reviewing the parameters and causes of a trending and significant topic in Trinbagonian pop- culture as well as musical anthologies used as research on infidelity. In simple terms how do you determine the basis of a horn?

According to “Shadow”( 2000 )  to be a candidate for such a phenomenon one must  first answer specific questions such as: “ you working ?,  you joking, you dealing, you stealing ?”If your answer to these specifics are all met with ,no, then you are in fact a candidate for horn and have also created the parameter from which horn is based also know as the  “you looking for horn”.

THE ONE CENT LEAVING THE PARTY?

Ok, so remember when Collin Lucas took the task of teaching people how to “Dollar wine” like how ‘trinis’ wine?

Every good Trinidadian knows that Dollar Wine starts with “cent, 5 cents, 10 cents, dollar”.

By the time, you reach the dollar, your waist would make 360 degrees like the coin shape!

Recently, there has been talk about the Central Bank retiring the one cent. 

Therefore, no more $99.99 sale from Francis Fashions where your conscience feels lighter for not spending a whole $100.00

 No more scattered spare one cents guaranteed to scratch your phone card.

Times are changing and apparently with the cost of minting one 1 cent coin the cost is 21 cents. 

The most cost effective move is to retire them.

What does that mean for parties years from now?

Nothing much, except..... new generations will be confused as to the reference of this currency. 

Imagine explaining to your children “once, long ago we used to have one cents when I was younger”.

If it saves $15 million per annum. , I say it’s ridiculous to keep them. 

As far  as the country goes in these times of an economic decline; it’s a small but necessary change (pun intended). 

We sadly say good bye. 

As the song goes “forget all the small change, gimme big money wine”

Making Market

The tradition of making Sunday, or Saturday market for the week is one seeped deep down in our Caribbean roots.

As times proceed into a more “modern” world there is the option of produce in the grocery and a lot of people deferred to that option.

 However, there is nothing like going to the market in Trinidad.

Some people suggest Maracas Bay or the museum to be totally emerged into Trinbagonian culture.

I say try the market!

It's the place where the condensation of culture and Trini nature is condensed and strongly offered up to highlight the nation's produce.

How many times have you ventured to the market and found comedy relief from the hot sun or heavy bags in a market vendors jingle?

 I'm talking from the classic: “Try it Yuh might like it!” to “I have the pine to make Yuh gyal tingle down she spine”,

" Who want hot and slimey, Yuh looking for me ! (insert suggestive look on vendor’s face)

ochro allyuh ochro!”

If not for supporting a culture that supports the country #strictlylocal.

Go to the market where not only the red mango, fudge, jellabi ,khruma and fruits are sweet ….

But everyone is.

Because you are every vendors’ 'darlin,darling’  sweet, sweetness, lover, sweetheart, ‘doux doux’ which in case yuh don't Know (Doux Doux) is sweet x2.(so Yuh GT)

The produce is fresh and the prices are much less ridiculous than the Jingles.

Quality for Yuh Money

 Hi Guys

If anything a Trinbagonian likes is to get a bargain.

In this time of economic downturn where every dollar counts

You might even end up prioritizing to the full extreme

One day you might be at the gas station and you may be weighing how important it is to put gas in the car

I mean it never hurt anybody to walk !

Ent our great-grandparents use to walk to work?

All the little change you get from the cashier 

If it fall, you picking it up

You not playing that !

That is to change in the bank at the end of the year!

So when you bounce in the school cafeteria and your hungry

 And you insist you only going to spend $5 (cus you not cheap, you just  really want value for your money right?)

And you see aloo pies...$5 

What do you do?

You start to thank God for the lady who makes the pies

And ask God to give her the  strength and ability to make more pies...  for the rest of the semester without changing the price.

You know things serious when this happening!

The Birdie

Is it just me or  do you all love the music of our land?
Isn't our music just one of a kind!
Better than that we have some skillful writers eh
People, I am not talking about writers who rhyme "wine" with "wine"
Or those who repeat the word "hand" so many times it leaves you wondering if they suffering from Tourette or you may simply wonder how many hands he really wants me to show him ?
(Human body only has two hands-I WondER if he is aware 😕)

I am talking about songs that when you hear them you feel your heart bursting with pride
Songs that tell a story of your history
Songs that have you sitting there telling yourself that there must be another meaning than the literal one
This is what you call Ridiculous skills and talent!

There is a particular Calypsonian that comes to mind when such skills are mentioned.
Some call him Birdie 🐦
Some call him Mr. Slinger Francisco
Some call him the Mighty Sparrow
(I really hope you know who he is and not playing catch up!)

Calypsoes by Birdie are without boundaries when it comes to this art form.
Songs can be found on education, love, politics and sometimes pure comedy.

Let's analyse one of Mighty Sparrow's famous songs- Congo Man (1964)

Congo Man is ingenious. 

It is a double entendre...so it tells two stories.

One explanation for Congo Man is that he is simply telling a story of how two white women  travelling through Africa were captured by Cannibals in the Congo and may be eaten alive.It was believed that the Congolese captured and ate their enemies and foreigners.

This song was strategically written and realeased during the period (1960-1966) as there was a "Congo Crisis" . There was turmoil after the Belgian government was removed. This lead the country to be unstable.

Another approach to this song suggests the manner in which some "black men", supposedly, desire white women. It talks about the culture or mindset where men desire lighter skin women because they were deemed favorable because the opportunities that would be presented if they had children together. Lighter skin children would have more opportunities than darker skin children.
